Faith Promise Giving

What is a Faith Promise?

A Faith Promise is a promise to give based upon one's faith in God. In making a Faith Promise, a believer looks to God "in faith" asking Him how much he should promise to give, and then committing to give as God provides. Unlike a pledge, the commitment is "vertical" instead of "horizontal"--it is a commitment to God as an act of faith rather than to a church, society or charity.

When making a Faith Promise, a believer looks to God for provision. This kind of expectant faith offers God an opportunity to pour financial blessings into His work through His people. In essence, the believer asks, "How much can I trust God to give through me?"

What does the Bible say?

In II Corinthians 8 & 9 Paul says the Macedonian believers "gave as much as they were able" and even "beyond their ability." The second phrase suggests a sacrificial giving beyond known resources and income. Faith Promise Giving is based on this Biblical concept of trusting God to provide beyond one's own ability.

What is the relation to missions?

Although not limited to foreign missions programs, recently Faith Promise Giving has been widely and effectively used by churches to finance foreign missionary enterprises. This method of giving has allowed believers to directly participate in missionary work, and has released abundant resources to do God's work at home and overseas.

How are Faith Promises made?

Normally, commitments are made during a special event in the church, such as an annual missions conference. Churches distribute Faith Promise cards or have their members publicly declare their individual promises. Most commitments are made for one year and are given as monthly gifts through a local church or mission agency.

The Faith Promise demonstrates our expectant faith in God's provisions, allowing Him to entrust us with abundance in order to bless others. The real blessing and joy is seeing God at work, providing for the needs of others around the world through us.
